Driving in Winter Conditions: How to Stay Safe Behind the Wheel

Winter is on its way, and here in New Hampshire that typically means we can expect hazardous weather conditions, from snow and ice to sleet and freezing rain. Although we are accustomed to receiving large amounts of snow and other types of winter precipitation, these weather conditions can put drivers at risk, regardless of how many years of experience they have behind the wheel. Use the following safety tips we've compiled to help you and your passengers remain safe on the roads this winter.

  • Remain up-to-date with your car's maintenance. Before the first snowstorm hits, it's important to ensure that your car is tuned up and prepared for winter weather. Tire pressure can drop with cold weather, typically about one pound for every 10 degrees of temperature, so it's important to check this regularly, as low tire pressure can make it difficult and dangerous to operate your vehicle.
  • Another valuable tip in terms of maintenance is to ask your auto mechanic to check heating and cooling systems. Because of its lower freezing point, the recommended cold weather mix is a 50-50 combination of anti-freeze and water.
  • Be prepared with a full gas tank whenever possible, since it's common for cars to get stuck while driving in winter conditions.
  • Have you checked your windshield wipers? You will likely need to use your wipers frequently throughout the winter, so it's important to ensure that they are functioning correctly and that you have topped off your windshield washer fluid.
  • Even if you're running late, it's important to clear any snow and/or ice off your car before driving. Cleaning off your car not only plays a crucial role in the safety of yourself, your passengers, and other drivers on the road, but it can also prove beneficial in terms of gas mileage.
  • Clean your headlights regularly throughout the winter, as salt build-up can impact your night-time visibility.
  • Plan ahead and don't rush. Allow extra time when driving in winter conditions to avoid driving too fast and losing control of your car. Maintain safe following distances behind other vehicles since it may take your car longer to slow down when braking.
  • As with all other seasons, avoid distractions while driving. Driving in winter conditions requires a heightened awareness and attention to safety, so it’s more important than ever to avoid distractions and keep your eyes on the road at all times.
One of the dangers of winter driving is skidding on ice and losing control of your vehicle. Although accidents can still happen, even when driving with caution and taking the recommended safety precautions, keep the following tips and techniques in mind to help you prevent skids while driving in winter conditions:
  • Slow down well before turns and curves, and plan ahead for lane changes.
  • Be on the lookout for shady areas, visible ice patches, and piles of wet leaves, which are common skidding hazards.
  • Allow yourself ample time to come to a stop at intersections, as it may take your car longer to slow down on slippery roads.
  • Do not panic if you feel your car starting to skid. It's important to remain calm, steer in the direction that your car is sliding until you feel it regain traction, and then slowly straighten your wheels and keep rolling.
